Part I|Lecture on Haiku Literature

The Birth of Haiku

— Masaoka Shiki (正岡子規), Poet of Movement and Transformation

Lecturer: Professor Ahn Soo-hyun, Ph.D. in Literature
Secretary-General, Korea Haiku Federation

Masaoka Shiki was a poet who transformed traditional haikai into modern haiku and opened a new path for modern Japanese poetry through his literary principle of shasei (写生, sketching from life).

This lecture will examine Shiki’s journeys and movements, his illness and literary transformation, his sensory observations, and the aesthetics of shasei.

Particular attention will be given to the background of his celebrated haiku, 「柿くへば鐘が鳴るなり法隆寺」, including his journey to Nara, the Goshogaki persimmon, the resonance of the temple bell, and the sense of place associated with Hōryūji Temple.

A bite of persimmon
the temple bell rings afar—
Hōryūji at dusk

柿くへば

鐘が鳴るなり

Together, we will appreciate how the taste of a single persimmon, the deep resonance of a Buddhist temple bell, and the evening landscape of the ancient capital of Nara were condensed into a single haiku.

Part II|The Future of Korea Haiku and International Exchange

Moderator: Professor Kim Su-seong, Ph.D. in Literature
Director of Administration, Korea Haiku Federation

Main Topics for Discussion

  1. Establishing an organizational framework for the Korea Haiku World Youth Festival

  2. Creating a global Korea Haiku ecosystem in which future generations can participate in literary creation

  3. Developing an online Korea Haiku archive and strengthening international communication

  4. Developing a cooperative model for haiku cultural exchange that connects people across national borders

Through these discussions, we aim to create a foundation that enables teenagers and young adults to participate actively in Korea Haiku creation and international exchange.

We will also explore future directions for a global Korea Haiku network encompassing the Korean, English, and Japanese languages.
